- Rapid dissolving tablets(RDT)
As the name suggests, Rapid dissolve tablets are designed to dissolve quickly on the tongue or under the tongue, thereby reducing the need to swallow a tablet or capsule.
Upon introduction into the mouth, these tablets dissolve or disintegrate in the mouth in the absence of additional water for easy administration of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
RDT’s can be particularly useful for children and the elderly with issues swallowing large capsule/tablets. Conditions such as dysphagia (trouble swallowing), hand tremors, certain mental illnesses and developmental disabilities can often impair certain patients ability to swallow commercially available medicines.
They can also benefit if local absorption in the mouth is required for the medication to work. Certain drugs may be absorbed in buccal cavity, resulting in a faster onset of action and increased bioavailability.2

- Creams,gels, ointments,transdermal gels
The skin is the human body’s largest organ. It covers the entire body and serves as a line of defense against the external invasion of microorganisms and other environmental stressors such as heat, entry of chemicals and toxins, as well as dehydration.
Transdermal drug delivery via the skin can be beneficial because it avoids the risks associated with intravenous therapy and the often unpredictable effects of the drug on the stomach and liver. In certain instances, our pharmacists can work with your doctor or other health practitioner to prepare a medication in a cream, gel, ointment or other topical form to be absorbed into the skin. We compound many skin preparations on a daily basis. Whether it’s a cosmeceutical skin cream or a transdermal hormone gel, our compounding pharmacists are here to help.

- Troches(lozenges)
Troches are compounded lozenges that are designed to dissolve and deliver a medicine within the buccal mucosa (the inner lining of cheeks and lips).
Advantages of using a troche over a capsule or tablet include bypassing some of the effects of the liver and gut on metabolising and eliminating the medication. The buccal cavity is the most easily accessible transmucosal site and can allow medication access to the systemic circulation.
Many different medicines can be delivered via troches, including hormones. Troches can be flavoured and sweetened according the individual patient’s preference.
