Free health checks at Pacific Fair, Broadbeach

Yes, you can do a free health check at Priceline Pharmacy Pacific Fair in Broadbeach, on the self-service health check station provided by SiSU Health. In about 4 minutes it checks your blood pressure, heart rate, weight, BMI and body fat, and asks a few questions about diabetes risk, stress and smoking. There’s no appointment and no charge, and a pharmacist is nearby to explain what your numbers mean.

What does the free health check include?

• Blood pressure and heart rate. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, which is why regular checks matter. It’s a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. See what your blood pressure numbers mean.
• Height, weight and BMI. A quick way to track changes over time. BMI is a rough guide only and doesn’t account for things like muscle mass.
• Body fat. An estimate of how much of your weight is body fat, which adds to what BMI tells you.
• Type 2 diabetes risk. The AUSDRISK questionnaire estimates your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the next five years.
• Stress and smoking. A few quick questions about how stressed you’ve been feeling and whether you smoke.

What is the Shane Warne Legacy Health Check?

It’s a free check that focuses on your heart health. SiSU Health runs it in partnership with the Shane Warne Legacy, and you can do it at the health check station in our store. It looks at things like your blood pressure, heart rate, BMI, smoking and diabetes risk, and whether you take blood pressure medicine, then gives you a heart age estimate.

It’s a quick check, not a diagnosis. If your results suggest something worth following up, such as high blood pressure, it prompts you to see your GP, who can do a full Heart Health Check. You can choose this check or the standard health check when you start.

How does it work?

• It’s free, and there’s no appointment needed. Just come in during opening hours.
• The station talks you through each step, and a check takes about 4 minutes.
• We can email your results to you, so you can track them or share them with your doctor.
• If you check each time you fill your scripts, you can track how your numbers change over time.
• If a result is outside the healthy range, our pharmacists can talk it through and refer you to a GP. Help Medical is an independent general practice located inside our store.

What do blood pressure numbers mean?

A reading has two numbers, for example 120/80. The top number is the pressure when your heart beats; the bottom number is the pressure between beats. A single high reading doesn’t mean you have high blood pressure, but it’s a sign to check again and talk to your doctor. When should I call 000?

Call 000 straight away if you have a very high reading along with a severe headache, chest pain, shortness of breath, vomiting, vision problems, confusion or a seizure.

What else can help?

If your numbers suggest a change is worth making, our pharmacists offer free weight management support and quit smoking support. If you have diabetes, we’re an access point for NDSS supplies. And if you take several medicines, a medication review, free for Medicare card holders, can check they’re working well together.
